5 ways to promote healthy hair without switching your products

I feel like at some point in our lives we all look in the mirror and think “what the heck is wrong with my hair?!” Trust me, you’re not alone, but what can we do? I understand being nervous to switch to yet another brand that promises to deliver the results you desire so here are 5 baby steps you can take to help improve your hair health:

Use A Wet Brush

A SUPER SIMPLE SWITCH! Yes, the hairbrush you use matters. Wet Brushes are gentle and don’t pull or rip your hair out of your head. Switch out your hairbrush for a Wet Brush (you can grab one at Target, Walmart, eBay, Amazon, you name it) next time you’re at the store or online shopping and you won’t regret it.

Sleep on Silk or Satin

Silk and satin pillowcases will literally change the game! Did you know that the natural oils your body produces are good for you? Yep, you need them. Cotton pillowcases absorb them, while silk and satin pillowcases allow your hair and skin to absorb them. Silk and satin also offer more slip which helps to prevent breakage and tangles aka bedhead.

Use Scrunchies

The best thing that was brought back in style by the VSCO Girls were scrunchies. Scrunchies are the best thing you can put your hair up in. They allow slip and won’t get tangled up in your hair causing breakage or weakening your strands, plus since they are back in style you can find hundreds of different kinds to match your personal style. Some of my favorites are Honey Silks and Amazon (just search scrunchies and pick your favorites).

Loosen and Lower Your Ponytail

I get it, sleek tight ponytails are in style, sometimes there’s just no time to do your hair so you plop it right on top of your head, or when you’re working out you need your ponytail to be tight so it doesn’t fall out, but high and/or tight ponytails are hard on your hair. They cause tension and overtime weaken your strands leading to breakage. Try to limit the times you put your hair up like that.

If you’re someone who works out every day, try a French or Dutch braid instead of a tight ponytail. These are easier on your hair and still keep it in place. If you’re someone who loves a good messy bun, check out my tutorial on how to create a messy bun that causes less damage.

Turn Down Your Heat

This one is HUGE. I’ve been there. I was that person constantly using high heat and burning their hair. So I can tell you, it will fry your hair off and it’s not worth it. Try 360 degrees and work your way down from there. I went from 450 degrees (I know) to 270 - 320 degrees (depending on the hot tool I’m using). Also, please make sure that you’re always using a silicone-free heat protectant.
